Campus Issue
Students should be allowed more absent days. Currently a student can miss as many days of a class as there are of that class in a week. This is sometimes only one or two days. If a student is sick that is not enough time to get better. Many students come to class anyway and get other people sick. If they were allowed to stay home they would not come. Also the students are paying for their education and they are adults, they should be allowed to decide for themselves when they go to class. The existing policy is in place to encourage students to come to class and only miss class when it is necessary.

Planning Essay Four
The problem is that people do not get enough sleep. I do not have four different perspectives yet. They all say however that the solution is to get more sleep. For essay four I would write a proposal. In it I would propose that people get more sleep. I am not content with the research I have now. I need to find my four perspectives in order to write essay four.
In Class Writing Assignment Revision for Exploratory Essay
My draft of essay three has not changed since last Thursday. I think the peer comments helped me with my paper. I still plan on revising my draft and resubmitting it. I am not sure what the strongest element of my paper is, possibly the topic because I have a connection to it. I am concerned about my paper. It is still missing a lot, and I am not sure I should use the topic I have because I have had trouble finding four points of view.
Chicken in the Henhouse
Sedaris' argument is that people group homosexuals with people like pedophiles and see them as one on the same. He uses himself as evidence of people judging him based on his sexual orientation. Sedaris makes fun of what Audrey says. Like when Audrey states she is against something that obviously everyone would be against, Sedaris points it out in a humorous way. Humor is more effective because the purpose of the article is more to entertain.

Kathryn M. Orzech, David B. Salafsky, Lee Ann Hamilton. The State of Sleep Among College Students at a Large Public University. Journal of American College Health, Vol. 59, Issue 7, 2011.
The main point of this article was to publish the results of the sleep study. It was conducted by a large state university who surveyed students about their sleep. The students were surveyed several different times and interviewed. Through the research they found out that sleeping did improve health and well-being.

The focus of this article was on the effect sleep deprivation. The article uses information from multiple studies conducted on sleep. Using the information collected the authors conclude that sleep deprivation has a connection with how well students do in school.

This article studies male and female children from ages ten to thirteen. The study was of sleep patterns and the effect gender and puberty has on it. The patterns of females and males was different and was most likely effected by females going through puberty.

This article studied lack of sleep and the hormonal and metabolic differences. The differed between genders the study discovered. The lack of sleep affected how much of a hormone was released and in one type it was only released in males.

This study focused on college students and sleep. It found that females sleep less and not as well as males. Also the day of the week and whether it is on a weekday or the weekend effects grades. This study is very close to the point my issue explores.

This study focused on children aged ten to thirteen. It looked at the link between gender and puberty and sleep. It found that girls spent more time in bed over the weekend and had more sleep problems. The age group is younger than my focus, but it shows that even at a younger age there is a difference in sleep related to genders.

University of Cincinnati, A real eye-opener -- Researchers uncover which gender is losing sleep, 10 August 2009, http://www.physorg.com/news169133909.html
This article’s focus is on the fact that women lose more sleep than men. The reason proposed in this article as to why this happens is because they have more responsibilities. Which in turn stresses them and causes them to lose sleep.

SWA #23 Topic Proposal
My issue is about lack of sleep in college students, the effects of that, and whether it differs between genders. Lack of sleep has negative effects for all ages and genders, this is something proven in science. Many studies suggest that lack of sleep negatively effects academic performance as well. Many college students do not get enough sleep and their grades are affected by it. This issue would be of interest to college students who are the ones affected by lack of sleep. It would be of interest to professors who deal with tired students falling asleep in class. It would be of interest to a student’s parents who are concerned with their grades and well being. Also to scientists and people in the health field who want to find the effects of lack of sleep. There is however a variety of results about the effect lack of sleep has on each gender. Some studies do not consider it either because they do not think it is important or because they choose to focus on other things in their research. Others believe that there is not a difference between the genders and that the results from other studies on the subject are not significant. Many studies find differences between the genders. One finds that female and male patterns of sleep differ. Another finds that the females’ reaction time is slower than that of a male. And another study found that the cytokine, Tumor necrosis factor, increased only in males. As a college student this issue is important to me. My academic success is important as well as my health. And I currently do not sleep as much as I should. I would side with the results that say gender makes a difference.
